Thinking Ahead, And Back

I was thinking about the coming months with a new baby on the way. I’ve been thinking back to when CDF was pregnant with MD and how that was. The first thing that comes to mind is all the doctor visits that we had. Then all the evenings we spent together, often with me giving CDF a massage (foot or back) while we talked, or read a book together (often a pregnancy/what-to-expect book).

Then I was looking around on the Pregnancy magazine website and an interesting article on the front page jumped out at me, Pregnancy Magazine – The Last Big Hurrah, about taking a “babymoon” with your spouse before the baby arrives. First on the list was Mexico, so I think this is right up my alley. For about $1,300, she and I could spend a week in Manzanillo Mexico in a Garden Suite at the Karmina Palace. They also suggest Hersey, PA, which would be more appealing to my wife.

CDF is Pregnant Again

This morning CDF found out she was pregnant. She started wondering a couple days ago when she looked at the calendar. A few other signs (like longing for a pickle), were there but not much. But she took the test this morning, and it was positive. Interesting though how it was about the same time two and a half years ago that we found out about MDF.

Christmas

Christmas is over but we had a wonderful time this holiday season. As MDF is getting older she’s able to enjoy it more and more.

This year we followed advent with a calendar and candles. At supper CDF would light the advent candles on the dining room table and then at bedtime we’d let MDF open the window on the calendar for that day. We also made sure we read the Christmas story to her.

We aren’t “doing Santa” in that we’re not leading her to believe that Santa brings her presents, but I am (we are) trying to keep it a neutral “story” so she doesn’t “spoil” it for other kids who’s parents like to “pretend.” She has been asked if Santa brought her any toys, and she told us that Santa could come over and play with her new toys. It’s hard to know how to respond to that.

We spent Christmas Eve over at my parents house and then came back to Wilmington for the Christmas Eve service at Emmanuel. Then Sunday we went up to CDF’s parents’ house. Unfortunately I think we over-did things for MDF and wore her out. It took her at least two days to recover.

Leaves

Yesterday we were doing yard work again. I had plenty of time to debate this in my head (as I raked): even though we have to rake leaves, I still prefer having trees. We never had to do this much before, 5145 Richlands Hwy., 153 Brown Road, and 2714 Valor Dr. never had any trees to drop leaves — which is one of the reasons we bought this house.

MDF played in the yard as CDF and I raked. After I had gotten a number of big piles of leaves raked together she started running to them and “jumping” in the leaves — actually just sitting down — “plop” — in the pile. But she had fun.

New Look

CDF ordered some new glasses online last week and we got them yesterday. At first she wasn’t so sure she liked them, but as the afternoon progressed, she started to warm up to them.

She picked out a more trendy style (as opposed to her others which are more of a “classic” style), and they might just be a tad to big. But they do look good on her.

Breakfast Special

On the weekend I’ll often cook pancakes or waffles for breakfast — sort of as a Dad’s Special Breakfast kind of thing. Sometimes MDF wakes up early enough to help me. The picture below was actually taken back in August, and since it’s gotten colder she has been sleeping later, so I don’t see her until the pancakes are almost done and it’s time to eat.

Outer Banks

I took vacation time the first week of November and we went out to the Outer Banks of NC. We stayed at the Outer Banks Beach Club in Kill Devil Hills — not a mile away from the Wright Brother’s Memorial.

The resort was right on the beach, though we were the second row of buildings so we didn’t have a view of the water. We stayed on the third floor in a three bedroom condo — including a kitchen — and had a view of the pool. Of course it was too cold to swim in the outdoor pools, but MDF liked to look out at them and gave each one a name: the adult pool was the Momma pool, then there was the Baby Pool for little children, and the hot tub was the Sister Pool. She really wanted to swim, and one day we did finally go over to the indoor pool and swim for half an hour, but even then we froze!

We spent a lot of time on the beach, and the weather was great for it. It was around 75 degrees during the day, and so we spent a lot of time walking around on the beach, “in our toesies,” looking for shells, and just playing in the sand. Every once in a while we’d stick our feet in the water, but it was chilly already.

We took our bikes with us, and one day rode up to the Wright Brother’s monument and park. Unfortunately the traffic light was one that required a car to trigger a change, and one never came by. So with all the traffic going up and down Highway 508, we never did cross and go into the park. But we got to see the monument and area from distance before we turn back and just enjoyed the ride.

Developing Imagination

It’s great to be able to watch a child grow and develop. Great and terrible at the same time actually. MDF is starting to be able to think abstractly, in the sense that she has started to think about imaginary things. This is great when she plays house, or wants to “be sharks!” But not good when she’s scared of monsters at bed-time. I still remember being scared when I was little and I was hoping that MDF wouldn’t have to go through that, but I guess it is something every child has to deal with.

Yesterday CDF sent me an instant message right after MDF woke up from her nap which illustrates much of the above.

(15:10:11) chefdemala: well let me go check on her & see if she is ready to come out..

(15:10:31) chefdemala: she has said that daddy will come home soon…where’s daddy..daddy will come home soon

(15:10:43) chefdemala: i keep saying yes, he’ll come home soon…

(15:10:52) chefdemala: just a few more hours for her to wait now..

(15:15:19) chefdemala: i am a mommy boy..and i work at the sewing machine..

(15:15:34) chefdemala: morganne is a morganne monseter & she she works like her daddy

(15:15:37) chefdemala: ttyl!

Hanging out on the Beach

This was our first real day on vacation. Yesterday we had gone out on the beach a little and walked around the resort some, but hadn’t done much of anything.

After spending some more time in the morning on the beach (I think it was MDF’s idea), we took our bikes out to ride around. We headed north on Hwy 12 — which has become nothing more than a side road since Hwy 58 took over, but that was good for us. We actually went out to the main highway to try to cross over to the Wright Brother’s memorial, but traffic was constant, and our bikes wouldn’t trip the traffic light for us to cross. We waited for a while to see if a car would come along that wanted to turn, but nothing did. So instead we turned around and rode back to the resort.

Yesterday we had promised to take MDF swimming in the inside pool, so when we got back to the beach house, we got our stuff ready and went across the street to the office/pool. In spite of being inside, the pool was still cold. Too cold for me to get in past my hips, but CDF and MDF managed to get in nearly all the way. MDF had a good time regardless of the temperature, and probably would have stayed longer, but we took her out because she was starting to shiver.

Visiting a Farm, and Sharks!

Yesterday we took MDF up to Mike’s Farm just off of Catherine’s Lake Road. She really enjoyed seeing the animals there, and she even stopped long enough for us to take a few pictures by a wagon.

It’s Autumn!

While on the topic of MDF… she’s begun exercising/expressing her imagination and the most recent thing has been for her to pretend that CDF or I are sharks and she is a fish. Well, the other day her imagination got the better of her. I came in the house after getting back from work and she was watching TV. Apparently I startled her because she jumped up and ran in the back yelling to CDF, “Mom! It’s a shark!” It still amuses me.
