Date Night

Last night CDF and I went out for a date. I met her at Lumina
Station after her appointment with Wendy there, and we went over to
the next block to eat supper at David’s Deli. After supper we were
planning on going to walk on the beach.

The deli was a small restaurant/carry-out place that had a beach feel
(like a lot of the places near Wrightsville Beach). Regardless of the
casual atmosphere, the food was good. I ordered a cheese-steak
sandwich, and CDF got a burger. We were both full when we left.

Meanwhile, MDF had gone to stay the evening with “Pastor John”
and “Mrs. Christy.” They went to the beach too and played on the sand
and in the water, and then on the way back stopped at the Sahara
restaurant and got hot dogs to eat.

CDF and I did go walk on the beach. It had started to get cold,
especially with the constant breeze coming off the ocean. But we
walked for about half an hour before heading back.

CDF is Healthy

Last week, on Friday, CDF had her monthly check up and came back with a report of good health.

Sprinkler Sunday

This past Sunday, when MDF woke up from her nap, we got out the
sprinkler so she could play in the water. I helped her put on her new
princess bathing suit and we went outside.

It was almost 85 degrees, so it was nice and warm — good weather for
playing in the water. MDF had a ball. She especially liked to
let the water spray her tummy and often tried to sit on the spray as
well. I played with her some, but she mostly danced and played by her
self.

CDF came out and sat on the front porch to watch. She had the
camera and took pictures too. When MDF started getting tired of
playing, CDF suggested we go get some ice cream at Holland’s
Shelter restaurant. Looking at the time we decided to eat supper a
little early and go afterwards, so we wouldn’t spoil MDF’s
appetite.

Little Lady

CDF sent this email this morning:

This morning, I have an OB appointment & MDF will be going with
me. I dressed her in the shirt & skirt—she added the rest & came into
the bathroom while I was putting my make-up on to tell me she was ready
to go!

Summer Haircut

From CDF:

We had our hair cut yesterday. MDF did great while Kim cut her hair. Here are the before and after pictures. She cut just about as much
off of MDF’s as she did mine!

Stawberry Picking

This weekend we went to Lewis’ strawberry farm to see if their strawberries were ripe enough to pick and for CDF to get some parsley plants. The berries were ready and so after CDF got her plant we grabbed our buckets (one big one and one little one for MDF) and went out to the field. The first row we were directed to was kind of bare and a lot of the berries were still unripe. But the workers let us go down another row that had lots of big red berries. We got a bucket full of nice berries and managed to keep MDF from eating them.

Actually MDF did a great job of self-control. She really wanted to eat a berry, but we kept telling her that we had to wash them first. She even tried to convince me that pretending to wash them (“Wash, wash”) would work, but we persisted and she did wait until we got home to eat any.

After we were done picking, we got some ice cream: chocolate for CDF and vanilla for MDF. I shared with each of them. We sat at a round umbrella picnic table and ate most of the ice cream, and then finished it on the way home.

DUG 2006, Day One

2006-03-19 5:32 PM

I left Wilmington this morning at 10:55. CDF, MDF, and I had left the house around 9:30 and got to the airport in plenty of time. I had time to check in and then walk around and look at the shops for a while. By the time I got back to the gate, they were already loading, so overall, timing was good.

The plane to Charlotte was small, but not too small. The inside was tight, I had to duck my head to keep from bumping the exit sign in the isle, and if I stood up straight, my head could touch the ceiling. It had about 18 rows of four seats, so it could probably hold 70-80 people. The flight from ILM to Charlotte was very smooth and I was looking forward to the rest of the morning.

The plane going to Washington was bigger, it looked like it could hold 120+ people. I got stuck in the middle seat of 3. I started out on the isle seat, but then ended up moving over one so a late passenger wouldn’t have to climb over me. I don’t know if that was the best idea or not. The guy to my left, John Anderson by the ticket stub he forgot, was slightly gruff to start off with and got grouchier as the flight progressed.

They served refreshments (peanuts and a drink) on this flight, but then forgot to give the guy to my left his coffee which he complained about for the rest of the flight. The guy on my right was a young man who’s father had apparently been a pilot — at least one of the flight attendants had flown with the guy’s father. So because of that the flight attendants paid him a lot of attention, which only irritated the guy to my left, since they still hadn’t brought his coffee (he did get cream and sugar).

The captain has said that it was cold and windy in Washington, and we might have a rough landing, but I didn’t realize just how rough. As soon as we started on the approach to the airport, the plane started bouncing around in the turbulence. After a few minutes I started feeling sick. Fortunately my stomach held together, but my hands and legs got all tingely like they had gone to sleep — who knows where all that blood was going. But we made it down safely, and the worst was over. Strangley enough I started having hiccups as we taxied along, and they didn’t go away until I was out of the airport.

I had to take the Metro to the hotel, but the station was one escalotor ride away from the bagage claim area, so it was very convientient. It felt a little like riding trains in Japan, except I could read all the signs this time. I bought a ticket for $1.35 which would take me to the Wardman Hotel/Zoo station. I had to switch tracks once, but didn’t have a problem finding which one. I had to wait for about 10 minutes at the intermediate station — which was under Chinatown — and stood in a big underground area beside a black family. The mother was telling the (i’m assuming) father not to take the baby’s pacifier away unless he wanted the baby to start singing, which most other people with think was screaming. Hmm… Also there were a bunch of people with cameras, either a tourist group or a photographers convention I guess — probably tourists, since they seemed to think they could take pictures of the whole subway station from the balcony and use their flash to light it up — which I thought was doubtful.

Finally I got to the exit station and went up two sets of escalators. The first was very long, almost made me dizzy and sick again looking up it. But soon enought I was up and out of the subway tunnels, and only one block away from the hotel! It actually took me longer to walk around to the front of the hotel, than it did to get to it.

So now I’m in the hotel, registered for the conference, and thinking about what I want to eat for supper. I saw Joel in the hallway and he suggested Chinese, or Mexican down the street. He’s going to go eat with friends, but we will both be at the reception at 7 PM tonight. I got some coffee and a muffin from Starbucks after deciding $8.00 for a sandwitch was too much at the hotel’s gourmet “take-out” shop.

A BIG Bed

We switched out MDF’s crib for a twin bed this afternoon. She was given a comforter set at Christmas and had started talking about sleeping in her “BIG” bed for the past week or so. CDF and I decided that it was time to let her start sleeping in the twin bed we were saving for her.

So we went up to Jacksonville this afternoon and brought the bed back in Roy’s truck. After moving the crib into the spare bedroom (we almost had to take it completely apart), I brought her bed in. We had a minor set-back when I couldn’t find the twin-sized sheets (I think they’re in the attic somewhere) but recovered by using one of our full-sized sheets. Then we put the comforter on the bed and showed it to MDF.

“My beautiful bed,” she said, coming in the room, “It has flowers!” She was quite pleased with her new, big bed.

We’ve put her to bed, and I think she’s cried out once — CDF went to check on her — but I’m hoping she’ll make the transition without any trouble.

“The Farmer Took the Moose”

This afternoon MDF was singing the Farmer and the Dell, but she was making up her own verses. The one that struck me as funny was, “the Farmer took the Moose.” Sounds like something I would make up.
