Adventures

Tonight CDF went to a quilting meeting and I stayed home with MDF. That seeminly innocent statement turned into a evening of adventure. Not quite trouble, so I’m calling them adventures.

We started out playing on the floor, pestering Dixie, and eating crumbs around the kitchen table. Then somehow we made our way back to the computer room where we discovered a little “car” (see below) that was just big enough for her to ride. Not thinking, I put her on it and pushed her back and forth. She loved it. We went through the hall, into the living room, kicked the dog out, and went back down the hall.

Ridng a Scooter

I didn’t yet realize how much she was enjoying it, that is until I decided I was tired. I tried to get her off, but she clung to the handlebars. So we went around some more. We tried to stop again, but she wanted to keep going. Finally after the third time of “driving” around the house (I think the total was now about 15 minutes), I decided that it was time to stop. She fussed and fumed for a few minutes, but calmed down when we started getting ready for a bath (one side note on that: wait until the last minute to take off her diaper).

She’s gotten big enough where I can sit her in the tub without the baby seat. I keep a careful watch on her and she’s done fine so far, but normally I only let her out of the seat for the last minute before I dry her off. Tonight I decided to not use the seat at all and let her sit in the bath by her self. She splashed a lot and even was brave enough to crawl after a toy (the water is shallow enough for that). It was actually easier to wash her that way, I didn’t have to try to get around the seat and I could turn her around if I needed to. Near the end she got some water up her nose and that was the end of the fun and so I got her out.

Baby Birds

A group of mocking birds showed up yesterday morning on our back fence. I heard a bunch of squawking while I was fixing my lunch for the day and saw a couple of baby birds sitting on the back fence. They were soon joined by their parents and soon lined up along the back fence. I ran to get my camera and got a couple of pictures. They didn’t stay around long.

Then another baby bird started squawking…

Swimming

John and Christy have let us borrow their pool. Monday evening we cleaned it out and filled it up. Then yesterday afternoon, when I got home from work, we took MDF out to play in the water.

CDF and MDF got in first while I took some pictures. MDF liked splashing around while CDF held her. She looked like she was trying to drink and suck her thumb at the same time, but CDF was keeping her head above the water.

A little later on I got in and held her some while CDF laid back and relaxed. MDF had apparently decided it was more interesting to try to climb the pool walls than it was to swim, and so she kept going for the sides.

Birthday Plans

Whose birthday? Why MDF’s first birthday. That’s right, CDF has started planning the event. So far everything is under control, but you never can tell with first birthdays. We’ve made reservations for a shelter at Hugh McRae park, one near the tot playground. I think we have four hours starting at 3:30 pm.

The guest list is around thirty-five people(!), but we’ve yet to send out invitations and I suspect that up to half of them won’t be able to make it (that’s how it usually goes anyway). Fortunately we’re only doing cake and ice cream and won’t have to feed everyone.

6-Hour Trips at the Drop of a Hat

We went to Virgina this weekend. A town called Dublin, in the mountains. All this was decided Friday morning and we were on the road by one o’clock in the afternoon. We had talked on and off about going to CDF’s family reunion and generally decided not to go until the very last minute. It all worked out well though and CDF got to spend time with the family she wanted to see.

We did have some excitement on the trip. On the drive up we got stuck in traffic on Hwy 52 just outside Winston Salem. Then on the way back it was raining and kept getting worse until we were driving past Greensboro at 45 mph. Then MDF cried for 45 minutes when we had an hour left to get home.

The reunion was at a park in Dublin. A nice one, with a pool, four baseball diamonds, trails, playground, and picnic shelters. We were in a gazebo near the back of the park that was situated on a little hill.

We ate lunch at the same table as Dick Beam and CDF talked a good while with Dorthy Beam. Near the end I talked with cousin Lewis about his laptop and then about his university computer systems (he’s the Dean of Libraries at a state university [I think]). MDF played a lot and eventually wore herself out and slept for a while.

Noisy Dog

It’s amazing how loud Dixie can be. This morning I was trying to be quiet and not wake anyone when I got out of bed. Well Dixie woke up to and wanted to get up with me. But when she got halfway out of the room she decided to give a great big yawn (weeeep), sneeze (chew), and scratch (ch, ch, ch, ch, ch, ch). I could only roll my eyes. This much noise and she doesn’t even have her collar on (which you can hear anywhere in the house).

Cool Summer

I just want to note that today (although still technically spring) the temperature is still very nice, warm but not too hot. Seems unusual to me, though my dad always claims it doesn’t really get hot until August.

It should be a “cool” summer for CDF’s parents too. They’re about set to head for Japan. CDF went up to Jacksonville to say goodbye and they’ll be heading for Raleigh tommorow.

Quilting Show

CDF is starting to get into quilting as a hobby. She’s already made one quilt as a throw for Stephanie and Vasco, and she’s currently working on another for her nephew. But I think she’s gotten even more inspired (although we had to fight off some dispair) after we went to a quilt show on Saturday.

There were a lot of beautiful quilts on display at the show, some were more complex than others (not to mention the group that were all hand sewn). She found one pattern that she’d like to try soon, but most of them just amazed her. She got to talk to some people, and may try going to the quilting meetings that are held locally. I think it would be great if she could get involved with somthing like this.

We should have taken our camera and taken pictures of the best quilts, but alas we didn’t know that camera’s were allowed until we got inside. A lot of artistry is involved in quiliting, more than I realized before.

Picnic Blanket

We were up at my parents this weekend for Heidi’s birthday party (21!) and were having a cookout in their back yard. They set out a blanket for MDF to crawl on and she loved it. She would play for a while in the middle of the blanket and then crawl to the edge to feel the grass. She went back and forth many times. CDF and Ruth took a bunch of pictures so I’ll have to post one here.

MDF was also interested in the cats and dog that my family has. She especially liked to watch the cats. We tried to get close to both of them, but they’re really shy.

Another thing of note, when we went by CDF’s parents’ house before heading home I noticed that Sparky has become calm enough for me to let her sniff MDF. She’s actually better than Dixie in one important respect: she doesn’t lick!

Crawling…

She’s got the hang of it now. All around the living room, down the hall, back up the hall, into the kitchen. She is crawling everywhere. She’s not very speedy while you’re watching her, but don’t take you eyes off for long, ’cause she’ll move faster than you think.

She’s also starting to pull up. She hasn’t been successful on the coffee table seen in the picture below (as far as I know), but she can stand in her crib, and with the footstools in the living room.
