Better Today

CDF rode to the doctor yesterday with Pastor John and Charles (it was very nice for them to give her a lift). She had a check-up and they said she looks fine. She got some antibiotics for a possible infection. She’ll take two pills a day for the next week. Hopefully she won’t be sore for too long.

We also found out that the doctor’s office had tried to call us back twice on Sunday night, but the phone company said our number was out of service. It’s the first time that it’s happened, and I hope it doesn’t happen to often (if ever again). Especially not when we were expecting an important call like that.

Dire Portents

Yesterday evening we went for a short walk, at about 8pm. We were back home and I was working on packing for a business trip when CDF started having pains in the front, left side of her abdomen. She managed to hobble to the bed and when I got there she appeared to be having bad cramps. After a minute or two the pain started to go away.

Then it got worse.

Maybe five minutes or so after she lay down, she sat up. A minute later the cramps returned, and were much more severe. I started getting a little worried… this looked exactly like I imagined labor contractions, but I was sure 29 weeks is to early for that.

Eventually the cramp subsided and I sat down to see if any of her books said something about false labor. Fortunately it did… a whole section. What CDF was experiencing match the symptoms: they occur most often in the evenings and after physical exercise. The contractions (which is what they were) occur at irregular intervals and strong contractions are usually followed by by weak ones.

Fortunately, CDF only had two strong contractions, the rest were weaker. I think the whole episode lasted between 30 and 45 minutes. Today she’s going to the doctor so they can check and make sure everything is still okay (at least they called back this morning, never heard back from them last night :-/ ).

Good Report

This past Friday CDF heard from the doctor about the results from the GTT. Her sugar levels were normal! Needless to say, everyone was very happy and a lot of prayers were answered.

She is more aware about her sugar intake now and she’s been checking the nutrition labels a lot lately (ketchup, salad dressing, soda, etc.). I think she’ll settle down now though.

We did get some helpful advice from Theresa McArthur about foods she can eat while keeping her sugar intake low. She’s not supposed to have more than 3 carbohydrate servings at one meal. Sodas are right out (until after the pregancy, of course). We’re blessed to know someone who can give professional advice.

On another though… I never realized that soda drinks had so much sodium. While Sam was contemplating putting salt in his drink (what he won’t try), somebody beat him to it!

Meeting People

On Friday, while CDF and I were waiting for the nurse to complete the glucose test (by drawing blood), a pregnant lady, followd by her family, sat down beside us — apparently about ready to go into labor. I didn’t reconize any of them, but as they were leaving, the mother came back into where we were (down the hall from the waiting room) and asked if my name was [jModule]. It turned out that our families had been friends many years ago, at Plaza Manor Apts. The mother name was Terry Dyer, and the daughter who was pregnant was Jennifer.

Unfortunately my memories are vague. I know the name, and the mother’s face is familiar. But I was only 3 or 4 years old when our famlies were neighbors. I do remember visiting them here in Wilmington when I was older (but I don’t know how old), and I have a mental picture of walking down a street with Dom, Ruth and Jennifer leading the way (maybe with her sister too). Also I think they had a waterbed. :-/ But that’s about it.

The really amazing part about the whole meeting is that Jennifer was the one to recognize me. I’m sorry that I couldn’t say the same (though I did remember her name after a while).

Anyway, Terry was very nice and introduced herself to CDF, asking how far along she was. We talked for a minute or two before she had to leave.

I close before I end up making comments about small worlds and such.

Sugar Tests…

We had a combined check-up and glucose test last Friday (7/11). To start everything off, CDF had to drink half a bottle of the orange sugary liquid (very sugary). It gave her a headache after a little, but other than that she was fine.

The check-up was routine. CDF has gained 2 pounds since the last visit (up to 19lbs total now) and her belly, while on the small side, is growing like it should. I think we saw Dr. Lewison (thin, short and straight blond hair). As before she was very laid back and appeared to be satisfied with how the pregnancy was going.

CDF did very well when they drew blood — to complete the sugar test — and I think the nurse did a good job too.

Today they called with the results of the test… 🙁 CDF’s blood sugar was elevated (she failed the test) and she has to go back on Wednesday for the long test (3 hours) to determine if she has Gestational Diabetes. That will mean watching her sugar intake and a lot of finger pricks a day (four) to check the sugar level.

Energetic Baby

Last night the baby was moving around again. She (85% 😉 would kick and move when ever CDF laid on her side. I was about asleep when CDF woke me because the kicking tickled. She put my hand under her belly where the baby was kicking the most. Right before I fell asleep again (not intentionally mind you) I felt a bump-bump-bump. CDF burst out laughing again, saying it felt somewhere in between having a cramp and being tickled.

Silly baby. 🙂

She’s Kickin’

Yesterday was the first time I felt our baby kick. I may have felt her before, but there was no mistaking it this time. 🙂 She’s been getting more active every day… and stronger too.

Also, when my wife and I were in bed, we placed a bookmark on her belly and watched as it bounced from the baby moving and kicking. Feisty little girl.
