Father’s Day

From CDF:

For [jModule’s] Father’s day we had a very low key type of day. We all attended church together and that evening we took a stroll at Wrightsville Beach. It was so nice & the girls thoroughly enjoyed it. We did not take our suits, but wished we had once we got there. The water was so calm & it was high tide.

I love the picture of Clo close-up with how the sunlight is hitting her face. And Mo — the picture says it all — she was having a BLAST!

Take care! Come enjoy the beach for those of you that live inland!!

Challenged Books

Last month NPR ran an interview with author Toni Morrison about the topic of banned (or challenged) books. More recently I was reading an article in a home school magazine about a similar topic which directed me to the American Library Association’s web site for more information on books that have been challenged. These two were from opposite view points, so I wanted to look at the information myself. I’ve generally been against censorship, especially because of the examples of how it was used against Christianity in communist countries during the 1980’s and before. So I was somewhat surprised to find out that this is something completely different.

Following the ALA link above, you can look at what books were challenged and why. The majority last year were challenged because of sexual content, violence, or because they were not appropriate for the age group. I was surprised. I expected something about politics or religion to trigger the challenge. I would consider that to be unfair. Instead I see books that fall into an X-rated category being rated as such. Hardly censorship in my understanding.

Even more impressive is the report on who initiated the challenges. The largest category for 2000-2005 was parents! They initiated 1824 challenges. The next group, “Other,” was less than a quarter of that. Patrons of the institution and Administrators came in third and fourth, both with less than 300 challenges. Religious groups had only 18. So it seems to me that parents are doing a good job of taking responsibility for their child’s education. In fact another chart shows that most challenges occur at public school, which is what one would expect when parents take an interest in what their children are learning.

So while I support freedom of speech, and object strongly to the type of censorship we see in Iran, Russia, and even sometimes here, this is not the same. A parent has the right to object to their child reading a book with the equivalent of X-rated sex scenes. There will be plenty of time for the child to read such material as an adult — when it may be more appropriate — if they so choose. To call this censorship just makes the ALA look silly.

Bennett for a Day

Thursday evening of last week we went for a walk like we often do around past the hospital and back up to Hayes street. As we got to the intersection of Bennett and Hayes we saw a little kitten coming toward us. He was mewing and toddling along. There were a bunch of flies on his back and I had a sinking feeling that he was in bad shape. Still he had pluck and tried following us up the next street. We took pity on him and I ran ahead to get a box to carry him in.

On closer inspection we could see that the flies had laid masses of eggs on his back. References on the Internet suggested that these flies are the first to spot rotting meat. I could only imagine what sort of sores were on this poor animals back. Still we took him home to see what we could do. While CDF talked to someone on the phone about getting him to an animal shelter I looked closer. His eyes were infected and couldn’t open (he must of been following us by the sound of our footsteps). and while his fur was matted with eggs, I couldn’t see any wounds or blood or anything that might suggest an injury. I put on rubber gloves and started to clean the eggs off.

It turned out that the cat was uninjured. Once we cleaned the eggs out of his fur he looked okay on the outside. We gave him water and a little to eat.

Asleep after a bath

The next morning CDF and the girls took him to the vet. He was very week, dehydrated, and had a viral infection that was common to kittens. They gave him fluids and we got medicine to give him. CDF took him home and gave him a bath to get rid of the fleas. The vet said if he could survive long enough to get back his strength he would be okay. We decided to name him Bennett for the street where we found him (or he found us).

Unfortunately the next morning he had gotten so weak he was having trouble holding his head up. He no longer wanted to eat or drink. By the time we got him to the vet it was apparent he was fading away. The vet took him back, but soon returned and said he had died.

We were all sad and Mo cried some. But we were still happy that we were able to help the little guy have a comfortable last few days.

Friend Cat

At the house across the street lives a friendly cat. Clo calls her “our friend cat,” and both girls like to go visit her. We normally do that by walking down the side street beside the house. The cat is usually in the back yard or by the garage and she nows comes out as soon as she sees us. She has gotten to where she will lie down and let the girls rub her tummy.

Our Friend Cat

Every once in a while she’ll follow us home, but she knows about our dog and doesn’t come further into our yard than the end of the drive way.

Ninth Wedding Anniversary

CDF and I celebrated 9 years of being married today. As far as celebrations go it was simple but reminiscent of the days when we were dating. We took some fast food and had a picnic at the beach and then walked up to the inlet between Wrightsville Beach and Figure Eight Island.

This picture reminded CDF of a song by Sixpence None the Richer, with the line “you and the moon are a beautiful sight to me…”

You and the Moon

Close to the inlet there were nesting grounds for shorebirds. As we got close a couple of them took off and appeared to be buzzing us, flying close as if to warn us to stay away. So we stayed close to where the waves came up.

Near the Inlet

On the way back we spotted a sand sculpture. CDF said it must be a lobster, but I thought it looked more like a crawfish.

See My Toast!

I was talking to the girls on the phone this morning right before they had breakfast. Clo was telling me they were going to have toast and then asked, “You want see my toast?”

I could hear her running over to the table and then she exclaimed excitedly.

“See my toast!”

In the background CDF burst out laughing.

Pumpkins and Blackberies

This year we planted pumpkin seeds in the garden. I put two in a single 4-foot square plot, along with two watermelon seeds. At this point the pumpkin plants are taking over the plot and trying to move into the next one!

Pumpkins in the Garden

Meanwhile the blackberries have been abundant this spring. The patch next door has finally ripened and this morning we picked a bunch to eat. I suspect that all the rain we’ve had is what has made them big and juicy.

Blackberries

Yesterday the girls and I picked blackberries from a patch a couple blocks away near the creek. We had found it the day before, but could only get a handful. But they were the biggest, juciest wild blackberries we’ve seen around here, so we decided right then to come back with a bucket.

I’m sure the girls ate more than they picked, but we had enough to eat them with ice cream tonight and still have more left over for tomorrow. We mixed them with vanilla ice cream and put some whipped topping over it all.

Eating Ice Cream

Mo was enjoying her’s and paused barely long enough for me to snap this close up of the dessert.

Considering the Modern Church

I’ve been reading Sean Tucker’s blog recently, in which he muses on the modern church, and especially on how the mainline churches have moved away from the Bible and toward their own idea of religion. So far I find myself agreeing with many of his observations. I feel blessed that I’ve found two churches (Emmanuel and New Covenant in my area that teach truth from the Bible (and challenge the members to live by that truth). But will people who are disillusioned like Sean turn toward a church affiliated with a small reformed denomination? Reading his posts have made me consider what I can do to reach out to people hungry for the truth of Christ.

This week MD got her costume for the spring dance recital. CDF to some pictures of her posing out by the azalea bushes.
