Public Speaking

I have always been known as quiet, but growing older I have found it easier to be more outgoing. I still have a long way to go, especially in casual conversation, but public speaking is an area where I’ve really improved. I’m sure doing the announcements, and now scripture readings, prayers, etc., at church have helped get me over the stage fright.

This past October I was part of a panel on Disaster Recovery at the Community College IIPS conference. A while back a vendor we worked with asked if I would be interested in participating in a session and I agreed. It turned out that I would be presenting with four other people, so it wasn’t as bad as being the sole speaker. I made sure I was prepared, though, and had no problem speaking. I was actually better prepared than some of the others on the panel and they thanked me afterwards for carrying their part of the discussion.

Then last week and tomorrow I volunteered to teach classes on a reporting software package we use at work. I know it well enough to teach, but still I kind of surprised myself that I felt like getting front of a class. It’s been a few years since I last taught a class like that. It went well though — again, it’s good to be prepared.

Party

Saturday was the party. We invited family and friends and had a pot luck of hors d’oeuvres and desserts that the guests brought.

Birthday Cake

CDF made the delicious cakes: raspberry cheesecake and a spice cake with cream cheese frosting. Other people brought things such as meatballs, quiche (my Mom), a fruit bowl (Dom and Amber), fruit kabobs (Heidi), cookies (Roy), etc.

My Birthday

Even though it rained all day Friday we still had a good time at the Museum of Science. CDF took most of the pictures as we walked around the exhibits.

MDF and I in a “Bat Tree”

We started at the top floor and worked our way through the exhibits. MDF liked the dinosaurs the best I think, but we also had fun with the other nature exhibits.

CEF was fascinated with doors

CEF was just happy to wander around and investigate whatever caught her interest — which seemed to be doors most of the time.

Outside the woodlands exhibit

A hallway outside the woodlands exhibit had some wall murals that make a nice backdrop for pictures. The exhibit itself was interesting, with stuffed animals displayed in their habitat. I liked the one with a weasel that had caught a mouse.

Thirty

No, I don’t feel much older. In some ways I can recognize where I’ve grown older — matured to put it another way. But otherwise I really still feel as young as I always have.

I took the day off to go to Raleigh with the girls, where we had planned on hiking in Umstead Park. But instead it rained all day (which we did need), so we went downtown to the museum of science. We had a good time looking at insects, dinosaurs, and other animals. After the museum we went to Olive Garden for lunch.

Growing Up

We packed up most of CEF’s bottles last week and gave them to CDF’s sister to use. There was a sense of finality there: our baby was moving on, but also relief: no more washing day-old bottles. So my feelings are mixed. But one thought that has stuck with me is when they grow we experience new things and we don’t need to hold on to the past because what is next is good too.

As an amusing aside, emptying the dishwasher puts me in a thoughtful mood — a lot like mowing used to do. Don’t know why that is. 🙂

On Doctors

Tonight as we were getting MDF ready for bed, she had to have a bandaid put on her leg. While CDF put it on they talked about when she used to be a nurse. Later MDF told me about it.

“Dad, did you know that Mama used to be a nurse?”

“Yes, I did.”

Looking thoughful, she asked, “Did you used to be a doctor?”

I laughed, and said I have always worked on computers.

“She’s not a nurse any more,” MDF continued, “now she’s just a mama.”

MDF’s 4th Birthday

Today for MDF’s birthday CDF and I took her to Wilmington as a special thing for just the three of us. We went to Greenfield Lake to walk around, play at the play ground and “hunt for alligators.” We actually saw an alligator when we went over the big footbridge on the north side of the lake.

Enjoying the Park

After the park we went to Chic-fil-A for lunch. MDF played in their play zone too. Then when lunch was over we went back across Market Street to Walmart and let her pick out something to buy as a birthday surprise. From Walmart we went over to Cold Stone Creamery and got ice cream. MDF picked strawberry ice cream with M&M’s on the top. CDF got cheesecake with Snicker’s bars mixed in.

A Surprise Present

Then after we got home, and MDF had a short rest time, she and I went for a bike ride on her new bike! She did great — exept for when she almost crashed head first into a big ditch, before she learned about brakes. Later this afternoon we went back out on the street, this time I pushed CEF in the stroller, and she rode without incident, having learned how to work the brakes.

Best and Worst of the Day

Right before bedtime prayers, CDF and MDF usually talk about their favorite and least favorite things that day. Sometimes MDF will ask me too. Last night she told me that the worst part of the day was when “Mama mowed my cattail.” She had a sad look on her face, but I had to try hard not to laugh.

MDF likes to pick the cattail seed heads that grow in the ditch on the north side of our driveway (actually they are closer to Huntingtons where the ditch gets lots of water and sun). This year there have been very few, mainly from the mowing and weed-killer that the city has used to keep the ditches clear. So a week or so ago I picked the last stalk for her, she played with it a while but then left it on the front sidewalk.

So when CDF was mowing the front yard yesterday evening she didn’t see the catttail in time until a plume of seeds started spraying out from under the mower. Then she looked over and saw MDF crying. They did go to see if there were any more growing in the ditch, but there was not.

I told MDF that we’d ride the bike this weekend and see if we could find any more cattails.

Biking to the Park

Saturday morning I took the girls to the Burgaw park. I hooked the bike trailer up to my bike and we rode over. I was a little hesitant about riding on Freemont Street, but I found that I had plenty of room on the side of the road and even if one wheel went in the grass, I didn’t notice it much.

When we got to the park we found that the church across the street was having some sort of revival, and there were a number of youth groups parading from the pavillion down the street ot the church steps. MDF and CEF watched from the jungle gym, and while CEF danced to the parade music, MDF was discussing how she would like to join the marchers.

A little while later we went to the swings. The parade was finished and they were starting to have people perform on the street. A man set up two congas and played for a while. MDF and CEF both just watched and smiled.

Personality Quizes

On occation I’ll find a quiz that is interesting, though most of the ones I get via email are just plain wrong. I was amused by the results of this one enough to save it.

You are .ogg Even though many people consider you cool and happening, a lot still find that you're a bit too weird to hang out with.
