Graduating from Preschool

Tonight MD celebrates finishing two years of preschool at the Presbyterian Church school. Her class has fifteen students graduating and they’ve been practicing songs for the past month to sing at tonight’s ceremony. We’ve invited family to attend and I expect we’ll be well represented.

MD was a little worried last night that I might not make it to the ceremony. She asked me a number of times if I was going to be there, and then came back out after being put to be to ask me if I knew where to go tomorrow. I told her that even if I didn’t, her Mama would get me to the right place at the right time.

CDF made cards for the teachers and put together a goodies basket with home-made cookies and home-made strawberry jam made from berries we picked this past weekend.

Coloring the Walls

The other day CDF sent this email about the girls:

I was in my room for a bit too long this afternoon apparently. My youngest child had decided to color on the living room wall in a corner she likes to hide in. I have very pale green walls & she her color of choice was purple. It was my fault for letting her have a crayon in the first place & not seeing the future that she will one day do this. So, I couldn’t get that upset, though I did pop her hand & tell her that what she has done is not good.

I then grabbed a magic eraser & sat down to do the cleaning. My oldest stood over me & asked if that had baking soda in it. I said no. “Well, you need baking soda, Momma. Baking soda works. You should use baking soda. Do we having baking soda?” I got a little irritated at my 4 1/2 year old domestic goddess telling me what I needed to use when what I had was doing just fine! The crayon came off the wall without taking my paint too!

As I was telling my husband about what happened, he made the remark, “She remembers. That’s good.” I had no clue what he was talking about…who remembered what?! Apparently, my quiet, nothing bothers him husband had found my now domestic goddess coloring on her walls during nap time one day. And he dampened a washcloth & sprinkled baking soda over it & made her clean the walls.

I have laughed so hard over the fact that he thought to do this & never told me about it!! He dealt with it & it was over. But that my oldest remembers how to clean crayon off the wall is wonderful. Now, I don’t mind her standing over my shoulder telling me what to use. She may know something I don’t!!! Laughing

Picking Strawberries

MD went strawberry picking with her preschool class. CDF took a bunch of pictures while they were picking.

Sunday Afternoon Bicycle Ride

We like to ride around the neighborhood on our bikes and MD has gotten really good at keeping up with us on her little bike. The first few times we went out on the street, I was a little worried about her making the turns and not ending up in a ditch, but we only had one close call.

Yesterday though, we were coming back to our street and saw a cat come out of a yard to meet us. I turned around to see it and MD followed me, but she didn’t turn sharply enough and ended up in the grass. For some reason her brake wasn’t sticking and she kept on rolling, slowly, toward the ditch. CDF said her face was just puckered in an “oh” expression as she rolled in slow motion into the leaf-filled ditch. It wasn’t deep and she jumped off without getting hurt as it flopped over.

She was slightly miffed as CDF and I started laughing when she was back on the street. But she started laughing too after a minute.

Everything About Science

One night this week I read the Berenstain Bear’s Science Fair book to MD. She really got into it, identifying solids and liquids, thinking about machines, etc. Afterward we went to find her mother for bed-time prayers, and MD told her, “We were reading Science Fair. I know everything about science now!” It must be fun to be four.

“Math! You gotta love it”

This morning CDF sent a series of instant messages about playing with a educational game that uses bears to teach basic math.

(09:59:31 AM) z: CE has some bears & MD has added & subtracted bears
(09:59:55 AM) z: she was excited to learn that 5=+2=7 and 3+4=7 too!
(10:00:10 AM) z: the same with 3+3=6 & 2+4=6
(10:00:23 AM) z: and taking away bears was something too
(10:00:36 AM) z: Math! You gotta love it

The bears are laid out on cards to form a math problem and then MD counts each set individually and as a whole to figure out the answer. She said that MD had to count the bears a couple of times before she would believe that different amounts can add up to the same total.

I’m certainly glad she is having fun learning.

Palm Sunday

This past Sunday MD participated in a service at a Baptist church that is a couple blocks away from our house. The children’s’ part was to each memorize a sentence that went along with her assigned letter and then to say it when her time came. MD did great, and said hers loud and clear enough for everyone to hear. The grandparents were able to come too, and that made it extra special.

Baby’s First Haircut

On Thursday, March 6, the girls went to get their hair cut. CE got hers cut for the first time. She was ready, in fact, she wanted to climb in the chair on Monday when I was getting my hair cut. So she was first and climbed right into the chair and sat down.

Before…

We mostly wanted her bangs trimmed to get the hair out of her eyes. I think it turned out just right.

Sunday Dresses

This past weekend I was able to get a good picture of MD in her Sunday dress, with her hair done up (actually the picture was too dark, but I fixed it… mostly).

And the previous Sunday, CE stopped to pose too.

Words Again

After I wrote about what CE could say she started saying more.

  • Cookie – for everything desert, and even snacks… makes it hard to figure out exactly
  • CEF – she can say her own name now! 🙂
  • Mo’ee – how she tries to say her sister’s name
  • ‘side – She loves to go outside and says this often.
  • Yeah – finally starting to say yes, instead of saying “no” to everything

MD gets a kick out of it just as much as CDF or I do. It’s nice that she’s trying, especially as she tends to get quite frustrated when we don’t understand what she wants (and she can’t tell us).
