Last Day of VBS

Yesterday was the last day of VBS at Mission Baptist. Parents were invited for the closing ceremonies that started at 6:00 PM. Each child was given a tee-shirt to wear that evening. CE got one too, even though she wasn’t old enough to participate during the week.

MD and CE Ready for VBS

CDF had been a helper for the older girls (and enjoyed doing it) so she had a shirt too. The people at the church have always been really nice and CDF enjoyed working with them for the week.

Yogurt

CE was eating Yogurt last night, and enjoying it a lot. I managed to get a couple of cute pictures while she was eating.

Stories from VBS

This year MD is going to Vacation Bible School at a nearby church again. She has been looking forward to it all spring and she was quite disappointed to learn that it would last less than a whole week.

CE didn’t know much about it, apparently, but when we got to the church on Sunday for the first night she wanted to stay with her sister. CDF volunteered to stay and help so I had to take CE home. She started crying as soon as she realized that we were heading toward the car, and cried all the way home.

I didn’t want to spend the next two hours listening to her cry, so I had to find a way to cheer her up. I decided to try the sprinkler since it was still close to 100 degrees outside and that would be a nice way to cool off some. It worked, she was happy to play in the water, although I ended up turning the pressure down until it was more like a small fountain since she really only wanted to get her feet wet.

During supper she “talked” about going back to find her sister and she was pretty excited to go back to the church. As we walked inside, some ladies said, “Hi, how are you,” and to my surprise CE responded with, “Hi… good.”

We found CDF, had a snack, and CE was finally really happy.

Floor Work

The picture below is what the floor looked like after I had cut out a 5 foot by 8 foot section and replaced it with 5/8-inch thick plywood.

Bunnies

Since we moved, almost three years ago, we’ve enjoyed seeing the wild rabbits that live around us. This year there haven’t been many about. In comparison, last year we had two or three regulars to the clover patch in our back yard.

So we were quite pleased to see this baby bunny in the front ditch as we went out for a bike ride. It sat very still while I went back to get the camera. It didn’t move until I got closer and it decided to make a run for the woods, making a wide circle around the bikes.

Bunny in the Grass

Interestingly we saw another adult rabbit on the bike ride a few blocks away from our street.

Goon Tower

Stumbled across this collective effort to create the Goon Tower while I was reading at kisrael.com. Not being familiar with the creators, I found some of it to be obsecure, but the overall effect is pretty neat.

Weekend Project, or not…

For a while now we’ve been planing on replacing the flooring in the dining room. The vinyl tiles are beginning to wear out, especially where the chairs go, and the whole floor is starting to show its age. Well Saturday, CDF and I got curious to see what was under the tiles and how hard it might be to tear up. So I suggested we pull up a few in a corner, that way it wouldn’t get in our way until the weekend that we had set aside for floor work.

It turned out that the floor tiles came up really easy. Actually it was a double set of floor tiles, since instead of removing the old ones, the previous occupants had decided to take a shortcut and put another layer on top. But no matter, they both came up easily. So, encouraged, we decided to see what the bump was behind the couch (where a fireplace had once stood).

Surprisingly it was just a extra-thick piece of particle board. Apparently the person replacing the floor after the fireplace had been torn out couldn’t be bother to find the correct thickness and put down 3/4 inch thick board instead of 5/8-inch board. Before I was going to be able to put down the new flooring, I had to cut that extra thick board out and replace it with 5/8-inch plywood. I started after CEF and MDF woke up from their naps and it took quite a while to cut it all out (including cutting into the original flooring to make sure I would have a good fit).

Once we finally had a whole in our floor, it was off to Home Depot to buy the lumber and flooring we wanted. We settled on an white tile design that would match the kitchen.

When we got home I discovered that I had messed up the cut on one side of the hole, and had to go back with the jig saw and straighten it out. But that would have to wait for another day. It was late enough and work enough for one day.

Pictures from the Graduation

They had a nice ceremony at the Presbyterian church. The children all did great. They sang their songs (“the ants go marching, hurrah, hurrah…) and there were no major interruptions from any of the four-year-olds, even when the ceremony started to feel like it had been going on for a long while.

Graduation Line-Up

Each child was given a diploma and a children’s NIV Bible. I think MD was quite pleased with hers.

She has a Diploma!

She also got flowers from her cousin and some plants from her grandparents. We’ll be giving her another present today, a board game and some coloring stuff.

Graduating from Preschool

Tonight MD celebrates finishing two years of preschool at the Presbyterian Church school. Her class has fifteen students graduating and they’ve been practicing songs for the past month to sing at tonight’s ceremony. We’ve invited family to attend and I expect we’ll be well represented.

MD was a little worried last night that I might not make it to the ceremony. She asked me a number of times if I was going to be there, and then came back out after being put to be to ask me if I knew where to go tomorrow. I told her that even if I didn’t, her Mama would get me to the right place at the right time.

CDF made cards for the teachers and put together a goodies basket with home-made cookies and home-made strawberry jam made from berries we picked this past weekend.

Coloring the Walls

The other day CDF sent this email about the girls:

I was in my room for a bit too long this afternoon apparently. My youngest child had decided to color on the living room wall in a corner she likes to hide in. I have very pale green walls & she her color of choice was purple. It was my fault for letting her have a crayon in the first place & not seeing the future that she will one day do this. So, I couldn’t get that upset, though I did pop her hand & tell her that what she has done is not good.

I then grabbed a magic eraser & sat down to do the cleaning. My oldest stood over me & asked if that had baking soda in it. I said no. “Well, you need baking soda, Momma. Baking soda works. You should use baking soda. Do we having baking soda?” I got a little irritated at my 4 1/2 year old domestic goddess telling me what I needed to use when what I had was doing just fine! The crayon came off the wall without taking my paint too!

As I was telling my husband about what happened, he made the remark, “She remembers. That’s good.” I had no clue what he was talking about…who remembered what?! Apparently, my quiet, nothing bothers him husband had found my now domestic goddess coloring on her walls during nap time one day. And he dampened a washcloth & sprinkled baking soda over it & made her clean the walls.

I have laughed so hard over the fact that he thought to do this & never told me about it!! He dealt with it & it was over. But that my oldest remembers how to clean crayon off the wall is wonderful. Now, I don’t mind her standing over my shoulder telling me what to use. She may know something I don’t!!! Laughing
