Always Relevant

Interesting post on the Anglopressy blog about the relevance of Jesus’ Gospel. How ironic that what people really mean by making it relevant is to take out the parts of the Gospel message that challenge and convict. We tell the story of Jesus coming to earth to “share God’s love” rather than relating what He really said, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17). Love sure is a big part of the Bible’s message and evangelism should be driven by love. But we as Christians can’t pick and choose what parts of the message to deliver. It has to be the whole thing.

Snow Day

CDF sent out this email about the snow yesterday.

jModule was able to come home from work early & the 5 of us were able to play in the snow. Dixie, as you can tell, joined in the family picture just in time! She was attacked by snowballs from MD & CE as well! And jModule as sweet as he is & you all know how sweet he is–threw many snowballs my way. In fact, he ambushed me a couple of times. Now do you call that sweet???

Needless to say, we are enjoying this snow!!

Parenting

CDF was reading a newsletter today and came across an article about parenting that talked about being intentional in the way one raises children. That’s something we strive toward with our girls. So it caught her interest and she started looking up more online and came across this web site called Intentional Parents. It covers a lot of what was in the original article and include extra information as well.

Silly Goodnight

Monday night MD had an emotional crisis — mainly due to the fact that she was overdue for bed — triggered by realization that she was going to bed at the same time as her little sister. She finally wound up in bed crying.

Meanwhile the little sister was laying quietly in her crib, and as I was talking I happened to look over at her. She was laying on her back, sucking her pacifier, with a small stuffed lamb perched on her forehead. I asked her what the sheep was doing and MD’s tears turned to laughter. She just grinned from behind the paci and turned her head so the lamb fell off. She can be such a clown sometimes.

Fantastic Contraption

I discovered a fun online game today (through the kisrael.com blog) that is about designing machines to move an object to the target zone. Looking at the forum, I’m amazed at the things people have “built” to solve the puzzles. You can see one of my solutions to a puzzle below.

Fantastic Contraption

I’m not an engineer so I build by trial and error, but it’s still fun to see the machines fail (often amusingly), and even better when it works.

Goon Tower

Stumbled across this collective effort to create the Goon Tower while I was reading at kisrael.com. Not being familiar with the creators, I found some of it to be obsecure, but the overall effect is pretty neat.

Thirty

No, I don’t feel much older. In some ways I can recognize where I’ve grown older — matured to put it another way. But otherwise I really still feel as young as I always have.

I took the day off to go to Raleigh with the girls, where we had planned on hiking in Umstead Park. But instead it rained all day (which we did need), so we went downtown to the museum of science. We had a good time looking at insects, dinosaurs, and other animals. After the museum we went to Olive Garden for lunch.

Growing Up

We packed up most of CEF’s bottles last week and gave them to CDF’s sister to use. There was a sense of finality there: our baby was moving on, but also relief: no more washing day-old bottles. So my feelings are mixed. But one thought that has stuck with me is when they grow we experience new things and we don’t need to hold on to the past because what is next is good too.

As an amusing aside, emptying the dishwasher puts me in a thoughtful mood — a lot like mowing used to do. Don’t know why that is. 🙂

Personality Quizes

On occation I’ll find a quiz that is interesting, though most of the ones I get via email are just plain wrong. I was amused by the results of this one enough to save it.

You are .ogg Even though many people consider you cool and happening, a lot still find that you're a bit too weird to hang out with.
